After
coaching at Southern Polytechnic State
University in
Marietta,
Georgia
for the last two seasons, Fenton
High
School
graduate Becki Wheatley returns home to Michigan.
Wheatley helped start the first
Women’s athletic team at the University
in 2002 where the Lady Hornets competed in
the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference.
Prior
to her assistant coaching days in Georgia,
she coached Junior Varsity Girls
Basketball at Fenton
High
School
while completing her teaching degree at Grand
Valley
State
University. Wheatley spent four years at
Grand
Valley,
three as a player and one as part of the
coaching staff. She was a three-year starter for
the Lakers from 1997-2000 and was captain
of the 1999-2000 squad.
During that time, Becki scored 670
points and grabbed 382 rebounds in 88
career games.
She ranks fourth in GVSU history
with 103 three-point field goals.
Wheatley was part of back-to-back
NCAA regional appearances by the Lakers in
1997-1998 and 1998-1999 and competed in
three GLIAC conference tournaments with Grand
Valley. Becki also coached the Freshman
Girls Basketball squad at Grand Rapids
West Catholic in the fall of 2000 and led
them to an 18-0 record in her first
coaching stint.
Wheatley
played her freshman year at Oakland
University
where the then Pioneers played in both the
GLIAC conference tournament and the NCAA
regional tournament and finished with a
23-5 record. Becki then transferred to
Grand
Valley
when Oakland
made the decision to go to the NCAA
Division I level.
A
three-sport athlete at Fenton High,
Wheatley competed in basketball,
volleyball, and softball. She played Varsity volleyball and
softball all four years and Varsity
basketball for three years, earning 11 out
of 12 Varsity letters. Becki was named Honorable Mention
All-State twice in basketball, All-State
twice in softball, and All-State
once in volleyball.
During her senior season, she was
named All-Metro 1st team in all
three sports as well as being named Area
Player of the Year in all three.
Wheatley has spent the last seven
years either directing camp or as part of
the camp staff all over Michigan,
including the Michigan All-State camp. She has been on staff at Grand
Valley
State,
Lake
Superior
State,
Northwood
University,
Wolverine, and most recently Southern
Polytechnic State University.
