Prior to her assistant coaching days in Georgia, she coached Junior Varsity Girls Basketball at Fenton High School while completing her teaching degree at Grand Valley State University. Wheatley spent four years at Grand Valley, three as a player and one as part of the coaching staff. She was a three-year starter for the Lakers from 1997-2000 and was captain of the 1999-2000 squad.  During that time, Becki scored 670 points and grabbed 382 rebounds in 88 career games.  She ranks fourth in GVSU history with 103 three-point field goals.  Wheatley was part of back-to-back NCAA regional appearances by the Lakers in 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 and competed in three GLIAC conference tournaments with Grand Valley. Becki also coached the Freshman Girls Basketball squad at Grand Rapids West Catholic in the fall of 2000 and led them to an 18-0 record in her first coaching stint.

Wheatley played her freshman year at Oakland University where the then Pioneers played in both the GLIAC conference tournament and the NCAA regional tournament and finished with a 23-5 record. Becki then transferred to Grand Valley when Oakland made the decision to go to the NCAA Division I level.

A three-sport athlete at Fenton High, Wheatley competed in basketball, volleyball, and softball. She played Varsity volleyball and softball all four years and Varsity basketball for three years, earning 11 out of 12 Varsity letters. Becki was named Honorable Mention All-State twice in basketball, All-State twice in softball, and All-State once in volleyball.   During her senior season, she was named All-Metro 1st team in all three sports as well as being named Area Player of the Year in all three.

Wheatley has spent the last seven years either directing camp or as part of the camp staff all over Michigan, including the Michigan All-State camp. She has been on staff at Grand Valley State, Lake Superior State, Northwood University, Wolverine, and most recently Southern Polytechnic State University.
